| Joe Brooks: | I started playing music when I was about 16 years old and I'm 25 now. And that's a very long time ago. Haha. And you know, I was just went to a local venue and an Australian British blues guitarist was playing and I never really knew much about live performance and playing an instrument and I was just really inspired by this guy playing the guitar so I just decided that that's what I wanted to do. Pick up the guitar and learn how to play it. And I've actually always dreamed about going back and playing on that same stage that I saw that guy. And I actually did. I headlined at that same venue. So that's where I started. |
| GLAM: | And what's your writing process like? |
| JB: | It changes. Every time is different. But basically, I try my best to think of something unique; a unique idea or a unique lyric or melody or chord pattern or style and try and rough with it. And sometimes I'll think of a lyric first or sometimes this melody will just be stuck in my head. Quite a lot of lyric writing I do on the airplane. I find that a very concentrative place. And a lot of melody I get in the car when I'm driving along. |
| GLAM: | How do you handle being away from family and friends while touring? |
| JB: | It can be really really tough. And it has been really really tough, especially recently. There's been some family news and it wasn't positive. And its just difficult being away on the road and not being able to do anything about it and not being able to be there for my family. Its been really tough. But I'm used to being out on the road. And I'm kind of a dependent person. I've got a good group of friends with me on the road. My band is full of great people and we all have really good laughs and I we get along well. |
| GLAM: | How's tour been with Tyrone Wells and Tyler Hilton? |
| JB: | Well, I did 45 dates with Tyrone which has been just fantastic. He's been an inspiration of my career and given me motivation of trying to make it last and stay in the music industry as long as I can. I really look up to the way he's done things. And we've just played 3 shows with Tyler. I only just met him the other day. But he's a really cool dude. We hit it off straight away, just a really nice guy. Its been fantastic, really fantastic. |
| GLAM: | How would you compare touring in the United States to touring other places like the UK, Europe, and Asia? |
| JB: | I haven't toured the UK in a while but I'm going back in September. But I love touring all the different places for different reasons. I love touring America because there's a lot of on-the-road stuff and there's a lot of time with the band and seeing beautiful sights. One of my favorite drives is driving though Utah and the mountains. Its special because one day you could be driving through the desert, then the mountains and the next, the coast. Just really beautiful places. And Asia, the fans are really cool. The culture is very different. They just do very interesting and unique things. Like this one time we were playing and I looked up and everyone was throwing these little miniature paper airplanes and they were all different colors and were falling from the ceiling. They bring a lot of gifts of candy and stuff like that. And in the UK, they're just really intense. Its like they're really loud, which is awesome. I'm really looking forward to going there in September. Because they are very very loud and excited. Haha. |
| GLAM: | So on a different note, if you could collaborate with any other artist or musician, who would it be? |
| JB: | I think Taylor Swift would be someone I'd love to do a duet with. She's got a very unique writing style that I think has really captured the world. So that'd be a great one. Or Coldplay. I love Chris Martin. |
| GLAM: | And who are you listening to right now? |
| JB: | Just a bunch of different stuff, really. I've been listening to a lot of Vampire Weekend. And some Two Door Cinema Club. And just a bunch of stuff. I listen to such a range of music. |
| GLAM: | What are some of your other interests besides music? |
| JB: | I love sports. I love sports a lot. Growing up, I played tennis every day pretty much. And I just love hanging out with my friends and eating and drinking and having a good time. And I love traveling. Traveling and seeing the world is just my favorite thing about anything in this world. |
| GLAM: | Any future plans that you can share with us? |
| JB: | Yeah, I'm in the process of booking a full US tour for October/November. So it'll be a full band and we'll be playing like an hour set. We've just been opening so it'll be fun to have much more stage time. So I'm very excited about that. So that's all coming up in October/November and we're coming over to the UK in September. And Europe in October and I'm aiming for Asia in November/December. |
| GLAM: | Any last words? |
| JB: | We're just playing the last show tonight on this tour in San Diego and then I go back to the UK for a week. And I'll be writing and recording and releasing a new EP in September. So yeah, I'm really excited about everything. |
